Our Lady of Trust

02-09-2021

The Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Confiança is located on a hill near the village of Pedrógão Pequeno, and from where it is located we have a phenomenal view of the Cabril Dam, as well as the Lousã, Sicó and on days when the sky is clearer, we managed to see up to Estrela Mountains.

Of immemorial construction, it is believed to have been built on the remains of a pre-Portuguese fortification around the 13th century by a noble knight who, reportedly being under arrest and on his way to Coimbra, spent the night in a cell in the Pedrogão Pequeno jail, and who claimed to be the victim of King's Court intrigues, and in his desperation he decided to pray, begging the Virgin Mary for protection and confidence in his innocence; so, looking at the mound in front of him, he had the vision of the appearance between stars of the image of Our Lady. At that moment, he promised to have a hermitage built there which, after his acquittal, fulfilled, under the invocation of Our Lady of Confidence.
The current building was built in 1906 by order of the Conceição e Silva family.

The current chapel has simple lines and is composed of a single nave, with a choir, above the main entrance. The altars are known for their great value with their old carving, which belonged to the former Convent of Santo António of Sertã. At the altars, are represented St. George, St. Francis of Assis and Nossa Senhora da Confiança (mor altar).

As a chapel with special management, not exclusively parish, Mass is not celebrated regularly in it, only in festive occasions, or weddings and christenings. Every year, however, festivities are held in honor of the Our Lady of Trust during the 7th, 8th and 9th of September.

We look forward to your visit!
