In central Portugal, between Castelo Branco and Coimbra, lies the Schist Villages Network, comprising 27 villages across 16 municipalities. The area is primarily composed of schist mountains, which are a significant part of the territory’s identity. Thanks to these stones, villages that were once in ruins are now award-winning tourist destinations. The inhabitants of these villages are so welcoming that if you engage in conversation, you’ll leave with the stories of life there.

The village of Pedrógão Pequeno, also known as the Schist Village, is located on the left bank of the Zêzere River, near the Cabril dam, and has 753 inhabitants (2011 data).

This village has a rich history, beginning long before Christ, and Roman monuments are still present, adding to the existing riches of Pedrógão Pequeno. Being one of the “white villages” of the Schist Villages, Pedrógão Pequeno boasts solid, thick walls that demonstrate an intimate relationship with the countryside, resisting the passage of time. There are many things to explore in this magnificent village, such as the Roman road, the Cabril Philippine Bridge, a pillory, private buildings from different centuries (from the 15th to the 20th century), the Manuel Ramos School Canteen, the old Misericórdia Hospital, the Ribeiro Bridge, the Parish Council building, several chapels, among other monuments found in the surrounding area.

  1. Cabril Reservoir

Cabril Dam, Pedrógão Grande

On the border between the municipalities of Sertã and Pedrógão Grande, on a line separating the districts of Leiria and Castelo Branco, this dam is the perfect destination to enjoy the best that the Zêzere River has to offer. The reservoir, the result of one of the largest dams in the country, also houses the Pedrógão Grande Nautical Club, which offers boat, canoe, and kayak trips. The site also has a boat ramp with capacity for about 20 boats. Fishing, especially for bass, is another activity possible in this location, which is also known for hosting triathlon events.

Casal de São Simão, Figueiró dos Vinhos

The beach is a 15-minute walk (via the pedestrian path) from the village of Casal de São Simão. The water of the Alge stream, which flows towards the Zêzere River, is so clear that you can see the small stones within it. The abundance of laurel and cork trees gives the air a comforting fragrance, and the green of the surrounding mountains, which lead to the Serra da Lousã, envelops us in a beautiful setting. There is a viewpoint on site so that you can fully appreciate the landscapes of the region. The river beach is located between two imposing crags, where climbing is practiced with several equipped routes, as well as rappelling or zip-lining. The smaller rocks are used as a sunbathing area or diving board.

A beach that is also a Schist Village, bathed by the Pera River. It has large green spaces, an extensive body of water, and a small waterfall with a stream running perpendicular to the river. The pine forests are tall and dense, providing cool and pleasant shade. This river beach offers its visitors a range of cultural and sporting activities.

Pear Chestnut Tree

A leisure, entertainment and fun complex located on a lake almost a kilometer long, right in the heart of Castanheira de Pera. An island in the center of the beach, a wave pool (the largest in the country), a reservoir and a centuries-old bridge create a special environment where it is possible to enjoy waves… 80 kilometers from the Atlantic coast.

In the clear waters of the Pera river, you can also take a ride in a rowboat or on pedal boats.

Sertã

The seclusion, tranquility, and contact with nature are the charms of this beach, located at the Troviscal bridge, right on the Sertã river, far from any town.

The beach resort features a bar, restrooms with easy access for people with reduced mobility, and boats for rent. In addition to the bar, the beach has a picnic area with various tables, benches, and a barbecue grill. The space was designed with children in mind, through the implementation of a shallow river area and a small playground.
