In central Portugal, between Castelo Branco and Coimbra, lies the Schist Villages Network, comprising 27 villages across 16 municipalities. The area is primarily composed of schist mountains, which are a significant part of the territory’s identity. Thanks to these stones, villages that were once in ruins are now award-winning tourist destinations. The village of Pedrógão Pequeno, also known as the Schist Village, is located on the left bank of the Zêzere River, near the Cabril dam, and has 753 inhabitants (2011 data).

This village has a rich history, beginning long before Christ, and Roman monuments are still present, adding to the existing riches of Pedrógão Pequeno. Being one of the “white villages” of the Schist Villages, Pedrógão Pequeno boasts solid, thick walls that demonstrate an intimate relationship with the countryside, resisting the passage of time. There are many things to explore in this magnificent village, such as the Roman road, the Cabril Philippine Bridge, a pillory, private buildings from different centuries (from the 15th to the 20th century), the Manuel Ramos School Canteen, the old Misericórdia Hospital, the Ribeiro Bridge, the Parish Council building, several chapels, among other monuments found in the surrounding area.
