During the 12th century, Cistercian monks inhabited the Convent of Santa Margarida de Aguiar and passed on all their teachings about the art of winemaking to the local population. It is based on this knowledge that the winery produces its award-winning wines today, both nationally and internationally.
As a point of interest, at the 10th Arribe International Wine Awards competition, Castelo Rodrigo’s reserve red wine won first place, and at the 13th Beira Interior Wine Competition, its white wine won second place.
This is only possible thanks to the 8,500,000 kg of grapes that arrive at the winery and are subsequently transformed into 6,500,000 liters of wine, of which 55% is white wine and 45% is red wine.
Regarding grape varieties? White wines mostly incorporate varieties such as Siria and Malvasia Fina. Red wines have a greater variety of grape varieties: Marufo, Rufete, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, and Tinta Roriz.
At Hotel da Montanha you can sample Castelo Rodrigo wines during your meal, enjoying the best of both worlds: a traditional and unique gastronomic experience and an excellent wine experience.
