PR 3 “Azereiro’s Route”
Quintã Schist Trail
The PR3 “Azereiro Route” is a circular walking trail that begins and ends near the former Quintã Primary School.
This route takes visitors through small agricultural holdings and forested areas composed of pine trees, eucalyptus, and strawberry trees (Arbutus unedo), offering a diverse and picturesque landscape.
Along the way, hikers can enjoy beautiful views over the Castelo de Bode Reservoir, with the Zêzere River providing a stunning backdrop.
Another highlight of the trail is the village of Moinhos da Ribeira, where visitors can observe the remains of traditional watermills, some of which are now partially submerged.
The Azereiro (Prunus lusitanica), also known as the Portuguese Laurel or Wild Cherry Laurel, is a native species and one of the rarest plants found in Portugal. Listed among the country’s threatened species, it is one of the natural highlights to look out for along the route.
